What a Powerful Weekend

The 5th Annual Power Awards Weekend was held in New York on May 6 - 7, 2011 to celebrate Power Ambassadors and their accomplishments throughout the past year. Find out who performed below.

The You Are The Power Concert featured Chrisette Michele on Friday, May 6 at 8pm at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. Hosted by the incredible Anthony Anderson, Power Awards were given out throughout the evenings amazing performances by Brian Courtney Wilson, Trin-i-tee 5:7, the Most Powerful Voices Contest Competition winners and Chrisette Michele. Special appearances were made by Mathew Knowles, Tamron Hall, Malinda Williams, Ruben Santiago Hudson, Tamara Tunie, Jacque Reid, Kevin Mambo and the honorary chair for the event, Cissy Houston.

2011 National Awardees

Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall Legacy Award

Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall (Legacy Award) has been involved with and supporting the Power To End Stroke campaign since its inception and has participated in every national Power Awards Weekend. She is featured in the first Power To End Stroke Passion Video, educating people about stroke and encouraging them to get involved with the Power To End Stroke campaign. She spoke at the 2008 and 2010 Power Awards Weekend events passionately telling her personal story of how stroke affected her family, particularly her mother. Dr. Hall serves on the Power Executive Leadership committee helping to find sponsors and donors for the campaign.

Pastor Smokie Norful

Pastor Smokie Norful participated in the 2009/2010 Most Powerful Voices regional gospel tour and performed at the 2010 Power Awards concert at the Apollo Theater. Pastor Norful has activated his health and wellness ministry by reaching out to their local community by way of health fairs, securing additional consumer awareness and registration for Power To End Stroke as well as blood pressure screenings.

Andrea "Dre" Nichols Everett

Andrea "Dre" Nichols Everett developed the Power To End Stroke 12-week fitness plan that is available at www. powertoendstroke.org/fitness. Dre is featured in photos and videos demonstrating exercises from the 12-week fitness plan and providing motivation to users. She was featured in local and national media and in social media promotions supporting the fitness plan and has participated in wellness events promoting the Power To End Stroke fitness plan and a healthy lifestyle.

Bernie Salazar

Bernie Salazar was featured in the Power To End Stroke 12-week fitness plan videos demonstrating the exercises and providing his personal story. He has participated in Lobby Day in Washington, DC and has met with Illinois U.S. representatives to speak about his weight loss journey and being heart healthy. Bernie is a Chicago American Heart Association Heart Walk participant, raising money for the organization. He also participated in the Chicago marathon and raised money for the American Stroke Association.

Myron Butler

Myron Butler served as a judge for the 2010 Most Powerful Voices Gospel competition as well as provided personal coaching for the winning choir. He performed in the 2009 Most Powerful Voices regional gospel tour and other local events. Myron has served as National spokesperson for Most Powerful Voices and 2010 Power Awards Weekend, including an interview on Good Morning America focusing on the topic of stroke and the Power To End Stroke campaign.

Chef Marvin Woods

Chef Marvin Woods conducted healthy cooking demonstrations on behalf of the American Heart Association at local events. He prepared dishes healthy dishes at the 2009 Power Awards Weekend in a highly popular breakout session. Chef Woods was a featured chef and showcased a healthy dish at the 2010 Power Awards Weekend VIP reception. He has conducted media interviews on behalf of the American Heart Association and engages the American Heart Association in his annual health event, allowing the AHA another platform to share health information with the community. Chef woods is featured in the American Heart Association's 2010 Healthy Soul Food Recipes Cookbook sharing the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Rev. Dr. Geneace Williams

Rev. Dr. Geneace Williams lead a faith-based research project for the American Heart Association's Power To End Stroke campaign. She developed the concept for a faith-based round-table and interviewed renowned pastors to discover gaps in resources and tools needed to optimally educate people about heart disease and stroke through the church. She led us in prayer and presented at the 2009 and 2010 Power Awards events and wrote the Power Litany for the 2009 Power Awards event. The Power Litany has been incorporated into the Association's Power Sunday toolkit.

George Willborn

George Willborn is a comedian who hosted the 2010 Power Awards Concert at the Apollo and promoted Power To End Stroke via the Michael Baisden radio show. George participated in several local Power To End Stroke events.

Mathew Knowles

Mathew Knowles is CEO and President of Music World Entertainment, and will be presenting the cash prize sponsored by Music World Gospel to the winners of the Most Powerful Voices Gospel competition. Mathew is the creator of the Most Powerful Voices compilation CD which will include the winners of the Most Powerful Voices Gospel Competition along with other renowned gospel artists. The CD will be sold across the country in May, American Heart Month at Wal-mart, iTunes, Amazon and other retailers; a portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association.

Honorary Chair, Cissy Houston

Cissy Houston is the honorary chair of the 2011 Power Awards event. Ms. Houston got involved with the 2010 Power Awards event and accepted the Legacy Award on behalf of Kirk Franklin, the 2010 Legacy Award winner.
